OWM's mission is to establish uniformity, SI use, and traceability in weights and measures by advancing national and international legal metrology standards, procedures, capabilities, and training.

Ensuring accuracy in the selling of measured goods, developing and enforcing the laws related to measurement accuracy, approving and inspecting measuring devices and investigating complaints of suspected inaccurate measurement.

OIML is to enable economies to put in place effective legal metrology infrastructures that are mutually compatible and internationally recognized, for all areas for which governments take responsibility
